Strawberries!

Strawberries! Summer is truly on the way. When you see strawberries on the vine you know the rest of the summer foods are not far behind.

These are not strawberries from our front porch. (See below, please.) I am hoping for that in the next few weeks. These are from Pennypack Farms. The first of the season. In the next few weeks I will be picking strawberries at local farms — Willow Creek and Solebury Orchards — until my fingers are red.

We are going to preserve as many as we can to keep us going through the year. I will share with you how I am going to freeze ‘em, jam ‘em, sauce ‘em, etc. But these are going to be lucky to make it to Monday.

They have already been dinner on a bed of local greens with a little balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Tomorrow they will be breakfast with the last of the yogurt I made on Wednesday. And then of course many of them will just be eaten.

Berries are my favorite summer food. When strawberries finally show themselves you know that blueberries, raspberries and blackberries can’t be far behind.
