The new year is still a good six weeks away, but it’s time to make at least one resolution: to update our blog more often.
We ‘ve been good about everything else, however, pertaining to our eat local, make-it-yourself lifestyle — including making our own yogurt, beer, and applesauce.
Last Sunday we visited Solebury Orchards in Bucks County. Pick-your-own was over for the season, but we still took the time for a stroll through the rows of trees, enjoying the light of a bright November afternoon. Then we bought our apples.
We have been making our own applesauce this fall, following the method described over at Doris and Jilly Cook. (Also, see their recent update.) Our departure from their process was using a food processor rather than a food mill, which we have yet to add to our arsenal.
What we haven’t eaten right away, we’ve canned, which is to say, quite a lot.
It is cliche to write about how eating the food you’ve put by will bring back memories of how you acquired and preserved it. I will have my cliche with pork and sauerkraut to celebrate the new year.
